A must place to eat in Penarth North Meets South, Penarth Coffee Shop

With echoes of South Africa as its theme, North Meets South café continues to thrive at the top of the picturesque Windsor Arcade.

The African influence is still going strong at North Meets South under chefs/owners Tony and Anna Slater, who are coming up for their second anniversary at the busy café.

“As well as the African memorabilia decorating the walls, all the dishes are named after places there, and flavours from the region are sprinkled throughout the menu,” says Anna. “One of our most popular dishes is a Moroccan-influenced chicken with fresh coriander – delicious.”

Open from 8am to 5pm Monday to Saturday, North Meets South has built a reputation for its excellent takeaway sandwiches, but Tony and Anna are keen to spread the word about what else they do.

“We do so much more,” says Anna. “We’ve extended the menu to include breakfasts and proper lunches – North Meets South has a licence for beer and wine – and a fantastic selection of French patisserie made for us by a local patissier.”

Since taking over the business two years ago the couple, who have three children themselves, have invested in a new kitchen and renovated the toilets and baby changing room to make it more comfortable for customers. There are tables inside the café and also outside.

The lunch menu includes curries and salads, all with the African theme, and all made fresh to order using locally sourced ingredients where possible.

“We cook all our meat, bought from Thompson’s Butchers, with fruit and vegies from Windsor Fruit Stores here in the arcade and our bread from Bruton’s,” says Anna

Tony and Anna also stock and sell Fairtrade tea, coffee, hot chocolate, sugar and biscuits.

“Our cakes are irresistible too, all hand made, especially our famous carrot cake. Come in for a slice, or a Panini, and a coffee, either to take away or if you have time to sit and relax for a while,” says Anna.

As well as running the busy café, Tony and Anna are the main caterers for Westbourne School, providing 40 to 60 hot lunches for the pupils and staff every day, and recently catering for the school’s graduation dinner.

Drop in and enjoy the great food, the warm welcome and the ambience at North Meets South.

Outside Catering

North Meets South offers a range of outside catering services for all kinds of functions. This can mean anything from catering for a local wedding anniversary; a family get together, a group celebration, schools or events and corporate hospitality. They are able to cater for groups of up to 200 people from their premises in the Windsor Arcade.

Tony says “Our menus give a balance that caters for a variety of diets and can be tailored to fit in with your ideas, a particular favourite dish or just to meet your budget or dietary requirements.”
